Tour Description
Begin your journey from Addis Ababa on your journey to the DANAKIL DEPRESSION and ERTA ALE, the famous volcano known for its dramatic lava lake.
This expedition also offers a rare opportunity to experience the traditional way of life of the Afar people, the resilient nomadic communities who have adapted to life in one of the hottest and lowest regions on Earth.

Day 1 – Addis Ababa to Semera and Erta Ale
Our journey begins with a morning flight from Addis Ababa to Semera. After meeting our team, we drive into the spectacular Afar landscape toward Erta Ale, one of Ethiopia’s most remarkable active volcanic destinations. After arriving in the Erta Ale area, we have time to rest and prepare for the evening trek. Dinner is served before we begin our night trek toward the volcano. Camels carry the camping equipment, water, food, and sleeping materials, allowing us to trek with a lighter backpack. We reach the volcano rim and spend the night surrounded by the extraordinary volcanic landscape, with the opportunity to observe the glow and activity of the lava lake when conditions allow.

Day 2 – Lake Afdera to Erta Ale
Today’s main destinations are Dodom, the base of Erta Ale, and Erta Ale itself, which we will reach later in the evening.
After breakfast at around 10:00 AM, we begin a 70 km journey across sandy terrain and ancient lava fields. Along the way, we visit local Afar salt miners and learn about their traditional salt-mining methods.
They pump saltwater onto the surface and allow it to evaporate, leaving behind a thick layer of salt that can then be collected. We continue to Dodom, where lunch is served.
Here, we complete the necessary arrangements and permissions for the Erta Ale trek and organize camels to transport camping equipment, food, and other supplies.
Local scouts also accompany the expedition. Dinner is served at around 5:00 PM, as we need to begin the trek to Erta Ale between 6:00 and 7:00 PM, when temperatures become more manageable.
Dodom is approximately 8.5 km from Erta Ale, and the trek takes around three hours. Camels transport the camping equipment and some supplies toward the volcano while we trek alongside them. Upon reaching the summit area, we set up camp at a safe distance from the rim and, conditions permitting, observe the dramatic volcanic activity of Erta Ale.
Erta Ale is a shield volcano rising to approximately 613 metres above sea level. Its summit contains a large caldera with volcanic activity that has made it one of Ethiopia’s most remarkable natural attractions.
We carefully position our camp away from the rim and, depending on wind direction and safety conditions, away from volcanic gases. We then spend the evening experiencing the extraordinary atmosphere of the volcano—hot, powerful, sometimes smoky, and unforgettable.

Day 3 – Erta Ale to Dodom to Hamed Ela
We wake early and begin our descent from Erta Ale toward Dodom, reaching the village after approximately two hours. Breakfast is served in Dodom, followed by some time to rest and recover from the trek. We then begin our long journey toward Hamed Ela, our next destination. The drive is approximately 100 km and takes around seven hours, depending on road and weather conditions. Lunch is served along the way.
We expect to reach Hamed Ela at around 4:30 PM. Hamed Ela is a larger local settlement with a population of approximately 500 people. From the village, Lake Asale—a vast salt lake—is within walking distance. We head toward the lake to enjoy the sunset and admire the beautiful reflections across the salt-covered landscape.
We then return to Hamed Ela, where we spend the night at our campsite..

Day 4 — Salt Mining → Lake Assal → Mekelle → Addis Ababa
We start the final day with a visit to Ragad (Asebo), an important traditional salt-mining area. Here, we can witness local workers cutting salt from the ground, shaping it into blocks, and preparing it for transportation by camel—an ancient tradition that remains an important part of life in the region. We continue to Lake Assal and explore its extraordinary salt landscapes before beginning our journey toward Mekelle.
From Mekelle, we take our return flight to Addis Ababa, bringing our Danakil adventure to an end.
