Day 1 – Addis Ababa to Arba Minch: Discover Dorze Village and Lake Chamo
Your 3-Day Arba Minch Cultural Tour begins with a domestic flight from Addis Ababa to Arba Minch, where you’ll meet your local guide and driver before setting off to explore the beautiful landscapes and cultural traditions of southern Ethiopia.
For travellers who have arranged their own transport to Arba Minch, our local team will meet you at your agreed collection point.
From Arba Minch, travel into the scenic Guge Mountains to visit Dorze Village, home to a community renowned for its distinctive traditional houses, weaving skills and agricultural practices.

During your guided visit, discover the remarkable bamboo-built houses that have become a symbol of Dorze culture. Often compared to the shape of elephants, these impressive structures demonstrate generations of traditional craftsmanship and architectural knowledge.
You’ll also have the opportunity to learn about the community’s weaving traditions and the cultivation of enset, sometimes called false banana, an important food source in southern Ethiopia.
Depending on local arrangements, you may be able to observe traditional food preparation, sample local dishes or experience an Ethiopian coffee ceremony.
Following your cultural visit, return towards Arba Minch for one of the day’s main highlights — a guided boat excursion on Lake Chamo.

Surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of the Ethiopian Rift Valley, Lake Chamo is particularly famous for its large Nile crocodiles, hippos and diverse birdlife.
As you travel across the lake with your local boat operator, keep an eye out for crocodiles resting along the shoreline, hippos in the water and birds such as pelicans, herons and cormorants.
Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, but this excursion provides an excellent opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of southern Ethiopia.
After your boat trip, return to Arba Minch, where you’ll check into your hotel and enjoy some time to relax before the following day’s cultural experiences.

Day 2 – Arba Minch to Konso: Discover the UNESCO Cultural Landscape
After breakfast at your hotel in Arba Minch, continue your 3-Day Arba Minch Cultural Tour with a scenic drive south towards Konso, one of southern Ethiopia’s most fascinating cultural destinations.
Along the way, enjoy views of the region’s changing landscapes, cultivated fields and rural settlements as your local guide introduces you to the history and traditions of the communities living in this part of Ethiopia.
Today’s main highlight is a guided visit to the Konso Cultural Landscape, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011 for its remarkable agricultural traditions, fortified settlements and cultural heritage.

The Konso people are particularly well known for their impressive dry-stone terraces, developed over generations to conserve soil, reduce erosion and support farming in the region’s challenging environment.
During your visit, you’ll learn how these traditional agricultural systems have helped local communities adapt to the landscape while preserving important knowledge and customs.
You’ll also have the opportunity to explore a traditional Konso village, where stone walls, narrow pathways and distinctive architecture reflect the community’s history and way of life.
Your local guide will explain the significance of the fortified settlements, communal gathering places known as mora, and generation poles associated with the Konso people’s cultural traditions.
Depending on the village visited and local access arrangements, you may also learn about waka, traditional carved wooden memorial figures associated with respected deceased community members.
Throughout your cultural experience, your guide will help facilitate respectful interactions with local residents and explain the importance of asking permission before taking photographs.
If time and local conditions allow, an additional visit to the Gesergiyo sandstone formations, sometimes nicknamed New York because of their unusual shapes, may also be possible.
Following your cultural visits, transfer to your accommodation in Konso, where you’ll have time to relax and prepare for the final day’s journey back to Arba Minch.
Overnight: Konso – Hotel accommodation (property to be confirmed).
Activities: Scenic drive from Arba Minch to Konso, guided exploration of the UNESCO-listed Konso Cultural Landscape, traditional village visit, agricultural terraces and cultural heritage, with an optional visit to Gesergiyo if time permits.

Depending on your return flight schedule, your guide may be able to arrange a short sightseeing stop along the way, giving you time to take photographs or enjoy the surrounding scenery.

Some activities involve short walks through traditional villages, including Dorze Village and the Konso Cultural Landscape, where paths may be uneven, dusty, rocky or occasionally steep.
The Lake Chamo boat excursion also requires passengers to board and disembark from a boat, which may involve uneven or slippery surfaces depending on local conditions.

From the waters of Lake Chamo to the green highlands surrounding Dorze Village and the agricultural terraces of Konso, this journey introduces travellers to some of southern Ethiopia’s most fascinating environments.
Lake Chamo – Crocodiles, Hippos and Birdlife
One of the main wildlife highlights of this tour is a guided boat excursion on Lake Chamo, situated within Ethiopia’s Great Rift Valley.
The lake is particularly famous for its large Nile crocodiles, which can sometimes be observed resting along the shoreline and sandbanks.
An area commonly known as the Crocodile Market is especially associated with these impressive reptiles, although sightings depend on water levels, weather and local conditions.
Lake Chamo is also home to hippos and a variety of bird species, making it an interesting destination for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers.
During your boat excursion, you may have opportunities to observe:
- Nile crocodiles – Often seen basking near the water’s edge.
- Hippopotamuses – Sometimes visible in the lake’s shallower areas.
- Pelicans and cormorants – Among the waterbirds found around the lake.

Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed, but your local boat operator will help you explore suitable viewing areas while maintaining a safe distance from animals.
The Landscapes of Dorze Village and Konso

The Guge Mountains, home to the Dorze community, offer a contrast to the warmer lowlands around Arba Minch, with cultivated hillsides, rural settlements and beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.
Further south, the UNESCO-listed Konso Cultural Landscape demonstrates how generations of local communities have adapted to their environment through traditional farming practices and carefully constructed stone terraces.

The coffee tours were a great way to learn more about Ethiopian coffee culture, which is like… such a rich history and tradition. You could really appreciate the experience beyond just drinking coffee. It was the nature, the people, the real africa…

I did several tours with this company. We visited Debre Libanos, Debre Zeyt with the Crater Lakes, and the Awash National Park. We had great tour guides by our side. Especially Joshua and Asmir! They did everything to make our time better. Not only during the tour but also with hotels, flight -tickets, and even a hospital visit on their day off. I am really grateful for them.
The things we experienced on our tours were simply amazing. As a Swiss going to Ethiopia for the first time, I couldn’t be more entertained than I was. We didn’t only visit the sightseeing spots, we also got a deeper look into the county outside the spotlight, and we could see how people were actually living their lives. On our trip to Debre Libanos, we even get the chance to spontaneously visit a wedding, which will forever be a core memory of my life!
I wasn’t sure what to expect at first
”After having some initial trouble with booking my first Ethiopian Tour the day before I was very happy to speak to Amir and with the arrangements to make sure I was picked up nearby where I was staying. This is without going on the tour – I really love my wildlife and history and seeing the wild Baboons and learning about the Debre Libanos Monastery was such an Incredible day out for me.”
