Tour Description
Welcome to the Simien Mountains – an adventure into the wild heart of Ethiopia. Discover a spectacular highland wilderness where dramatic escarpments, deep valleys, open grasslands, and remote mountain villages come together to create an unforgettable trekking experience.
This journey takes you deep into the Ethiopian highlands, following ancient mountain trails through landscapes that shift and evolve with every step. Along the way, you’ll encounter Gelada baboons, spot the Walia ibex – an endangered mountain goat found nowhere else on Earth, and perhaps even catch sight of the rare Ethiopian wolf roaming the high-altitude grasslands.
But the Simien Mountains are about much more than stunning scenery and remarkable wildlife. Trek through remote villages, meet local communities, and experience the traditional way of life of people who have called these mountains home for generations.
Short or Long Tour?
For those seeking a greater challenge, the route can be extended to Ras Dashen, Ethiopia’s highest peak, capping an already extraordinary journey with a thrilling summit.

Meet On Arrival To Ethiopia – Tour Option 1
This first option is for those prebooking this tour before arrival in Ethiopia. In this case if you let us know we can offer to meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel ready for pick up the next morning.
We can also offer assistance with booking hotel for this 1st day if needs be and show you around the City where you can enjoy traditional Ethiopian food, or experience the country’s famous coffee culture.
Extra Cost: $250 USD
If you are arriving in early hours of the morning or very late at night please try and let us know in advance for us to make more suitable arrangements.
Meeting up in Gondar – Tour Option 2
If you prefer to make your own way to Gondar before the tour we can also offer this as an option to. The 1st day of the tour will of course be visiting many of the same places but as you will be starting the day in Gondar of course we can plan extra activities for the day based on your personal preferences.

Your Simien Mountains Day-By-Day Itinerary
Here is what you can expect with your 4 day tour with us.
Day 1 – Transfer from Addis Ababa to Gondar City / Trek to Sankaber
Pick up from your hotel. We stop for breakfast before we set off from Addis Ababa Bole Airport for your Domestic flight to the historic Gondar City. Our tour continues in Gondar, meeting your local driver and setting off for the Simien Mountains national park – beginning the trek towards Sankaber.
The drive here is part of the day’s experience. As you leave Gondar, the scenery gradually changes, with cultivated highlands, rural communities, and mountain landscapes appearing along the way.
As you climb higher, the vast escarpments of the Simien Mountains begin to reveal themselves.
After completing the necessary park formalities, meet your local trekking team and continue your journey onwards to Sankaber, where the next part of your trek will begin the next morning.
Arriving in Sankaber, you will have your first real feeling of being inside the Simien Mountains. The cliffs drop dramatically into the valleys below, while the surrounding highlands stretch toward the horizon.
Overnight: Sankaber Camp
Settie into camp and enjoy your first evening in the mountains. If conditions are clear, the sunset over the escarpment can be a beautiful introduction to the days ahead.

Day 2: Sankaber, Jinbar Waterfall and Geech
Wake up to the cool mountain air and begin your trek from Sankaber toward Geech.
Today’s trail follows the spectacular Simien escarpment, where the mountains seem to faii away into enormous valleys. The combination of dramatic cliffs, open grasslands and distant peaks makes this one of the most memorable sections of the trek.
Along the trail, watch for Gelada baboons, one of the Simien Mountains’ most distinctive residents. You may see large groups feeding in the grasslands or resting on the rocky slopes.
Their presence adds something special to the experience, as you are seeing these remarkable animals in their natural highland environment.
Continue toward Jinbar Waterfall, where water plunges dramatically into the valley below. The character of the waterfall changes with the season, but the surrounding cliffs and landscape make it an impressive stop along the route.
After enjoying the waterfall and surrounding scenery, continue toward Geech.
As the afternoon progresses, arrive at the Geech campsite and settle into your accommodation. Away from the noise and movement of the city, the evening here is peaceful and simple, just mountain air, open landscapes and the sound of nature around you.
Overnight: Geech Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 3: Geech, and Chennek
After breakfast, leave Geech and continue toward Chennek, one of the most spectacular areas of the Simien Mountains.
Today’s trek takes you deeper into the highland landscape. The trail crosses open mountain terrain and passes dramatic viewpoints overlooking the deep valleys and enormous escarpments.
The scenery constantly changes as you walk. At one moment you may be crossing open grassland; a short while later, the trail may bring you beside a steep cliff with a completely different view across the mountains.
The Simien Mountains is also home to wildlife that makes the trek even more special. Keep watching the slopes and valleys for Gelada baboons. With some luck, you may aiso encounter the Walia ibex, Ethiopia’s endemic mountain goat, particularly around the rocky slopes of Chennek.
Eventually, Chennek comes into view. Settle into camp and take time to enjoy your surroundings. Chennek is famous for its dramatic mountain scenery, and the late afternoon is a wonderful time to simply sit back and appreciate the landscape.
Tonight, you are surrounded by some of the most impressive scenery in the Ethiopian highlands.
Overnight: Chennek Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 4: Chennek and Bwahit Peak. Back To Gondar and Addis Ababa — A Final Mountain Morning
Rise early at Chennek for your final morning in the Simien Mountains.
After breakfast, begin the trek toward Bwahit Peak (4,430 m), the second-highest peak in Ethiopia. The early start gives you the chance to experience the mountains while the morning light is still soft and the surrounding landscape is quiet.
The trail leads through rugged highland terrain, with rocky slopes, open grasslands and extraordinary views across the Simien escarpments. This is a final opportunity to slow down, take photographs and appreciate how different the Ethiopian highlands feel from the world you left behind just a few days earlier.
Keep your eyes open for Walia ibex along the rocky slopes.
These rare animals are endemic to the Simien Mountains and are one of the wildlife highlights of the trek. Geiada baboons may aiso be seen during the morning.
Reaching the Bwahit area, take time to enjoy the panoramic mountain views before beginning your descent.
Return to Chennek, meet your vehicle and begin the drive back to Gondar. The journey takes you out of the national park and through the highland countryside, giving you one last opportunity to enjoy the scenery and rural life of northern Ethiopia.
Leaving Gondar For Addis Ababa
On arrival in Gondar, transfer to the airport for your scheduled flight to Addis Ababa, subject to the available flight schedule.
As you leave the mountains behind, your Simien adventure with Abyssinia Explorer Tours comes to an end but the memories of the escarpments, wildlife, mountain trails and Ethiopian highlands travel with you.

Booking Terms & Policies
To ensure your journey with Abyssinia Explorer Tours is smooth and enjoyable, please review the following policies before booking.
⚠️ IMPORTANT PAYMENT NOTICE All tour balances are payable in cash (USD, EUR, or GBP) upon arrival, prior to the start of your trek. Please see the Booking & Payment section below for deposit requirements.
Booking & Payment A booking is confirmed once the required deposit has been received. The remaining balance is due in cash on arrival before the tour commences. A detailed payment schedule will be provided upon confirmation.
- Accepted Currencies: USD, EUR, GBP (Cash only).
- Note: Bills should be crisp, clean, and dated 2013 or later. Local currency (ETB) is accepted at the prevailing daily rate if preferred.
Cancellation Policy Please inform us as early as possible if you need to cancel. Refunds are processed according to the following schedule:
- 30 days or more before departure: 95% refund
- 29 to 19 days before departure: 70% refund
- 18 to 14 days before departure 45% refund
- 13 to 7 days before departure 20% refund
- Less than 7 days / No-show: No refund
*Non-refundable costs already paid, such as domestic flights, permits, park fees, or other advance bookings, may be deducted where applicable. If there are unexpected circumstances requiring a change or cancellation, the client should contact us as soon as possible, and we’ll try to assist.
Changes to Your Booking Travel plans can change. If you need to alter dates, itineraries, or arrangements, contact us immediately. We will accommodate requests where possible, subject to availability and any additional costs incurred.
Weather & Mountain Conditions The Simien Mountains are high-altitude environments where weather changes rapidly. For your safety, Abyssinia Explorer Tours reserves the right to adjust itineraries due to weather, trail conditions, or circumstances beyond our control.
Physical Requirements Trekking here involves uneven, steep terrain at altitude. Guests should be comfortable walking several hours daily. Please inform us in advance of any physical limitations or medical conditions relevant to high-altitude exertion.
Travel Insurance Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory. Your policy must cover trekking up to 4,500m, emergency evacuation, medical expenses, and trip cancellation. Proof of insurance may be requested before departure.
Permits & Park Regulations Entry to Simien Mountains National Park requires permits and adherence to local regulations. Our team handles all necessary arrangements as part of your tour package.
Wildlife & Nature While sightings of Gelada baboons, Walia ibex, and Ethiopian wolves are a highlight, they are wild animals and cannot be guaranteed. Guests must observe wildlife responsibly from a safe distance at all times.
