Your summit expedition begins early in the morning, potentially before sunrise, as you leave Ambiko with your local guide and begin the ascent through the surrounding mountain valleys.

As the morning light spreads across the Ethiopian highlands, follow the rugged trails towards Ras Dashen, passing through rocky terrain and increasingly exposed mountain landscapes.

The climb becomes more demanding as you gain elevation, making a steady pace and regular rest breaks particularly important.

Reaching the summit is a rewarding achievement, offering spectacular views across the surrounding mountain ranges and an opportunity to appreciate the extraordinary landscapes of the Simien Mountains.

Take time to enjoy the experience, capture photographs and celebrate your accomplishment before beginning the long descent back towards Ambiko.

After approximately nine hours of trekking, return to camp for a well-earned meal and a chance to rest following one of the most challenging days of your expedition.

Mesha Valley Simien Mountains Ethiopia

As you travel further from the main escarpments, you’ll notice the scenery beginning to change, with rocky slopes, cultivated fields, scattered villages and different types of vegetation appearing along the route.

This section of the trek offers an opportunity to appreciate the connection between Ethiopia’s dramatic mountain landscapes and the communities living in the surrounding highlands.

The journey can be physically demanding, particularly after the previous day’s Ras Dashen summit expedition, so your local guide will help maintain a comfortable pace with regular opportunities to rest.

After approximately eight hours of trekking, arrive at Sona campsite, where you’ll settle in for the evening.

With a more relaxed cultural experience planned around Sona the following day, this is a welcome opportunity to recover from the demanding mountain stages and prepare to discover another side of life in the Ethiopian highlands.

Overnight: Sona Campsite

Trekking: Approximately 8 Hours

Meals included: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Day 8 — Sona – Village Life, Local Traditions & Highland Nature

After several demanding days trekking through the Simien Mountains, today offers a welcome change of pace as you spend time discovering Sona and its surrounding countryside.

Sona Village life Simien mountains ethiopia

Rather than tackling another long mountain trail, you’ll have the opportunity to experience everyday life in the Ethiopian highlands, learn about local traditions and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of this rural community.

Morning – Discovering Village Life

Explore the local settlement with your guide and learn about traditional homes, farming practices, livestock keeping and the daily routines of families living in this remote part of Ethiopia.

Where residents are happy to welcome visitors, there may be opportunities for respectful conversations and a closer understanding of local customs and community life.

Midday – Exploring the Surrounding Countryside

Enjoy a gentle walk through the surrounding hills, cultivated fields and natural landscapes.

Along the way, your guide can explain how local communities depend on the surrounding environment for farming and everyday life.

Keep your eyes open for highland birds and other wildlife as you explore.

Depending on local availability and community preferences, you may have opportunities to observe agricultural activities, learn about traditional food preparation or exchange stories with local residents.

The emphasis is on genuine cultural understanding and respectful interactions rather than staged performances.

Return to camp and enjoy a relaxing evening surrounded by the peaceful landscapes of the Ethiopian highlands.

As you follow the trail towards Mulet, you’ll have opportunities to observe how the surrounding environment differs from the high-altitude mountain landscapes encountered earlier in your expedition.

Mulet Campsite simien mountains Ethiopia

Your local guide can share insights into farming practices, local communities and the ways people have adapted to life in this part of Ethiopia.

Take time to relax, enjoy dinner and reflect on the extraordinary journey you’ve experienced, from the high mountain peaks and Ras Dashen summit to the remote valleys and rural communities of the Ethiopian highlands.

Experience: Rural Ethiopian countryside, traditional farming landscapes, changing scenery and the final full trekking day.

How Difficult Is the 11-Day Simien Mountains Trek?

Difficulty level: Challenging

The 11-day Simien Mountains Trek is a challenging high-altitude trekking adventure, designed for travelers who enjoy long hikes, dramatic mountain landscapes, and authentic outdoor experiences.

You do not need to be a professional mountaineer, but you should have good physical fitness, reasonable hiking experience, and the determination to walk for several consecutive days. The combination of steep trails, high elevations, changing weather, and basic camping conditions makes this expedition more demanding than an ordinary hiking holiday.

Fitness and Hiking Experience

You should be comfortable walking for several hours a day over uneven terrain, including rocky paths, steep ascents, and long descents. Some stages are considerably more demanding than others, particularly the trek from Chennek to Ambiko and the Ras Dashen summit attempt.

Preparing with regular hill walks, longer hikes, stair climbing, and endurance training before your trip will help you enjoy the experience.

Altitude and Acclimatisation

The Simien Mountains reach considerable elevations, and altitude sickness can affect anyone, regardless of their fitness level.

If you’re arriving in Ethiopia from a low-altitude destination, it’s important to consider how you’ll adjust to the higher elevations. Spending time at altitude before undertaking strenuous trekking may help reduce your risk of altitude sickness, although it cannot eliminate that risk.

For more information about preparing for high-altitude trekking, we recommend reading the CDC’s guidance on high-altitude travel and altitude illness.

Guests should inform their guide immediately if they experience symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headaches, nausea, dizziness or unusual fatigue.

Our local trekking team will help assess conditions throughout the journey, but guests should communicate any symptoms immediately. If altitude sickness is suspected, your guide may recommend stopping the ascent, descending or seeking medical assistance.

Important: The itinerary may be adjusted depending on weather conditions, individual fitness, altitude-related concerns, park regulations and local safety conditions. Current route accessibility will be confirmed with local guides and park authorities before departure.

Wildlife & Nature

The Simien Mountains are famous for their unique wildlife.

During the trek, you may see:

  • Gelada baboons
  • Walia ibex
  • Ethiopian wolf
  • Rock hyrax
  • Giant Lobelia
  • Giant Hazel Tress
  • Highland birds and birds of prey

Wildlife sightings cannot be guaranteed because the animals live freely in their natural environment. However, our experienced local guides know the area and can help you find and identify wildlife along the trail.

Camping in the Simien Mountains

One of the most memorable parts of our 11-day Simien Mountains trekking adventure is the opportunity to spend ten nights camping among the spectacular landscapes of the Ethiopian highlands.

From the dramatic mountain escarpments around Sankaber and Geech to the remote valleys further along the trail, camping allows you to experience the natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere of the Simien Mountains.

What to Expect From Your Campsites

Throughout your journey, you’ll stay at designated camping locations along the trekking route, including Sankaber, Geech, Chennek, Ambiko, Sona, Mekareba and Mulet.

Camping conditions are basic, with facilities varying between locations. Hot showers, electricity and other modern conveniences may not be available, particularly at more remote campsites.

Temperatures can drop considerably overnight, especially at higher elevations, so warm clothing and a suitable sleeping bag are essential.

Camping Equipment and Trekking Support

Your local trekking team will help organise the camping arrangements throughout the expedition, allowing you to focus on enjoying the journey.

Camping equipment and support services will be provided according to the inclusions confirmed in your booking.

We recommend checking what equipment is included before departure, particularly tents, sleeping mats and sleeping bags.

Meals During Your Trek

Meals will be arranged throughout your trekking adventure, helping you refuel after long days exploring the mountains.

Depending on your confirmed package arrangements, meals may be freshly prepared at camp by a member of the trekking team.

If you have any dietary requirements or food allergies, please inform us before departure so we can discuss suitable arrangements.

Enjoying the Mountain Environment

Camping in the Simien Mountains offers a unique opportunity to appreciate the surrounding landscape beyond the daytime trekking experience.

Enjoy beautiful mountain sunsets, peaceful evenings and, when conditions are clear, spectacular views of the night sky away from city lights.

We also encourage responsible camping practices, including avoiding litter, respecting wildlife and local communities, and following your guide’s instructions throughout the journey.

With ten nights spent among Ethiopia’s remarkable highland landscapes, camping is an essential part of what makes this extended Simien Mountains expedition such a rewarding adventure.

Local Guides and Trekking Support

Throughout your eleven-day Simien Mountains adventure, you’ll be accompanied by an experienced local trekking team familiar with the mountain trails, wildlife and surrounding communities.

Your trekking arrangements include:

  • Professional local mountain guides.
  • Park scouts.
  • Experienced drivers.
  • Cooks and trekking support staff.
  • Mules and handlers to transport heavy camping equipment and supplies.

Our guides do more than simply lead the way.

They can help you understand the landscapes, wildlife, local traditions and daily life of the communities living around the Simien Mountains.

Behind the scenes, our support team helps organise the campsites, prepare meals and transport equipment between trekking locations.

With the essential arrangements taken care of, you can focus on the adventure itself — exploring the mountain trails, enjoying the spectacular scenery and experiencing the extraordinary environment of the Ethiopian highlands.

Incredible

I had a wonderful experience with Abyssinia Explorer Tour in Ethiopia! If you are interested in coffee, culture, and discovering the real Ethiopia, I definitely recommend them.

Asmir, our guide, was fantastic. His English was excellent, he was very knowledgeable and kind, and he made the whole experience feel natural. What I appreciated most was that it didn’t feel like I was just following a tour guide around. We connected so well that he actually became a friend along the way.

The coffee tours were a great way to learn more about Ethiopian coffee culture, which is like… such a rich history and tradition. You could really appreciate the experience beyond just drinking coffee. It was the nature, the people, the real africa…

Overall, it was a memorable experience, discoveries, and genuine human connection. Asmir really made the difference, he was a very interesting person with such a crazy interesting story ! I am grateful to have met him. I definitely recommend Abyssinia Explorer Tour to anyone visiting Ethiopia!

I did several tours with this company. We visited Debre Libanos, Debre Zeyt with the Crater Lakes, and the Awash National Park. We had great tour guides by our side. Especially Joshua and Asmir! They did everything to make our time better. Not only during the tour but also with hotels, flight -tickets, and even a hospital visit on their day off. I am really grateful for them.

The things we experienced on our tours were simply amazing. As a Swiss going to Ethiopia for the first time, I couldn’t be more entertained than I was. We didn’t only visit the sightseeing spots, we also got a deeper look into the county outside the spotlight, and we could see how people were actually living their lives. On our trip to Debre Libanos, we even get the chance to spontaneously visit a wedding, which will forever be a core memory of my life!

I wasn’t sure what to expect at first

”After having some initial trouble with booking my first Ethiopian Tour the day before I was very happy to speak to Amir and with the arrangements to make sure I was picked up nearby where I was staying. This is without going on the tour – I really love my wildlife and history and seeing the wild Baboons and learning about the Debre Libanos Monastery was such an Incredible day out for me.”
